Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, unveiled major strides in artificial intelligence (AI) content creation and editing tools today, announcing two major advancements: Emu Edit for image editing and Emu Video for video generation.
The company developed both tools under its Expressive Media Universe (Emu) project, which was revealed back in September. Together, the new AI tools for content creation hint at more intuitive and creative features for Meta’s family of social apps like Facebook and Instagram.
Emu Edit: raising the bar for image editing
The first breakthrough, dubbed Emu Edit, seeks to provide users with refined control over image editing. It ushers in a unique approach to image manipulation where users input text-based instructions to make changes to images. This is similar to the “generative fill” feature currently offered by Adobe Photoshop.
The tool can perform a variety of editing tasks such as local and global editing, adding or removing backgrounds, color and geometry transformations, object detection, and segmentation. Importantly, Emu Edit aims to limit modifications only to areas relevant to the edit request, ensuring that unrelated pixels remain untouched.
